Foreshadowing
Foreshadowing is when there are subtle hints in the text that give the reader an idea of what might be coming later in the text. For example, in "The Story of an Hour" the line,"There was something coming to her (Mrs. Mallard) and she was waiting for it, fearfully." foreshadows the heart attack that Mrs. Mallard dies of at the end of the story.
